General presentation

  1. The safe and efficient movement of travelers is an important objective of authorities around the world.
  2. The complexity of intelligent transport systems generates the need to define and create an ITS architecture. To achieve the functions required of these systems, it is necessary to integrate different systems into a single system.
  3. These systems have the potential to provide significant benefits related to operational efficiency, service quality, and infrastructure management, while at the same time improving safety, reducing environmental impact, and providing information services to users.

Highway ITS system

  1. Video surveillance — AID (Automatic Incident Detection)
  2. Video surveillance — PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom)
  3. Vehicle Flow Monitoring — VEH
  4. Radar cameras for detecting the speed of vehicles — Speed
  5. Cameras to recognize vehicle number plates — ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition)
  6. Weather monitoring and weather forecasts — Meteo
  7. Dynamic Weighing System — WIM (Weigh In Motion)
  8. Variable message boards (VMS)
  9. Monitoring and Information Center — CMI

AID ( Automatic Incident Detection):

  • The AID-Video Surveillance system has the task of elaborating on the traffic events generated by the sensors and providing immediate information in case of particular phenomena (queues, stopped vehicles, vehicles on the opposite side, pedestrians).
  • At the same time, the system ensures video surveillance functionality.

Video surveillance — PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom):

  • PTZ video cameras are very good for monitoring large areas due to the fact that they can be positioned according to need (360-degree rotation) and even enlarge the image from a distance (zoom).

Weather monitoring and weather forecasts Meteo:

The weather monitoring system consists of air sensors that record wind speed, the amount of precipitation, and air temperature, and ground sensors that record water film, road condition, and asphalt temperature.

WIM dynamic weighing system:

  • The Weight in Motion (WIM) system uses piezoelectric or quartz sensors in the asphalt to weigh and classify vehicles. With the help of this system, very detailed information is collected, for example: the dimensions of the vehicles, their types, the number of axles, the weights on the axles, and the total weight of the vehicle.
  • A WIM system—a high-speed weighing system—is installed on highways or national roads to weigh vehicles at normal speeds to detect, count, and classify vehicles.
  • The confidence class of this system is 95%.

VMS variable message boards:

  • VMS variable message boards are key elements of dynamic traffic management systems.
  • Depending on the traffic situation, variable panels display information, warnings, and guide drivers on the highways.

In practice:

At the level of the CMI, a dispatcher operates under a permanent regime, with the following main objectives:
